Hybrid Zoom Workshop

After the pandemic happened , I welcomed the opportunity to recreate a Deflected Doubleweave workshop experience for the Central Virginia Fiber Arts Guild that would keep participants safe. I came up with a hybrid zoom instruction plan that would allow participants, Melanie Rowan and Candy Hargett, to demonstrate along with me while the majority of participants interacted with us online.

Our set-up included a desktop computer, 3 demonstration looms with 2 LED light rings for each loom, and 2 phone or iPad cameras per station. Some of our best views for weaving demonstrations included a camera view overhead from an LED ring gooseneck.

Sampling

Sampling

Participants selected from 1 of 3 drafts following a pre-workshop zoom meeting. At the end of Day 1, participants washed samples to determine how they wanted to finish weaving their remaining warp. Samples shown above: (L to R) Jill Carrick, Koni McCleve, Candy Hargett, Janene Driscoll, Laurie Duxbury.

I took my 8 shaft Wolf Pup to weave samples and demonstrate a 4 color Rosepath Deflected Doubleweave. My warp consisted of 5/2 hand dyed Tencel, 10/3 hand dyed cotton, 18/2 zephyr (charcoal) and 10/2 JOY Tencel. Day 2 consisted of different treadling or tie-up change for each of the workshop drafts. Here is a view of my workshop warp scarf using 3 treadle variations after washing.
