Pure Michigan Wetfelting

Just returned from three days in Michigan. Always enjoy visiting the Lake Michigan area. This time we stayed close to Harbor Springs, but spent the first afternoon in Petoskey.

I was eager to felt this scene as it had a wonderful background and foreground. Used some white silk in addition to merino wool in the clouds. I also carded bits of white Angelina fiber in the clouds as well.
I’m always hesitant to show the photograph because the goal is not to reproduce the image as I often felt using multiple photo references. I’ve loved photography for years! Added a bit more emphasis on the wildflowers than the original photo in my Felting using silk.

Day 2 Wetfelting was to capture the foreground of the dunes and beach at Petoskey State Park. The photos I took are going to be used for an online class taught by Moy MacKay. I carded multiple colors and snipped pieces of brown and green merino wool and silk for the vegetation. My last effect was to cut bits of wool knepps to add some texture. I added some pieces of driftwood also, but it did not felt. Occasionally, I’ll add some items such as rocks, shells, pebbles or scraps of Handwovens to finished pieces (see gallery images for previous works or visit my works at the Orchard Gallery). It’s often hard to tell how a piece will turn out when a piece is wet. I really love how the vegetation has lots of movement.
