I love rocks! Felted and otherwise

I have a degree in geology and have always loved rocks! Who didn’t have some kind of rock collection growing up?? Over time my collection dwindled and I started collecting again. After moving to a new home this past fall, rockscapes were added in an effort to recreate a landscape created by continental glaciation (and perhaps more of an effort to reduce garden maintenance).

A rock was actually the first item I ever felted. The felting rocks of rocks is actually quite easy. They can be made by needlefelting wool roving and adding multiple layers and Wetfelting or they can be wetfelted around a an existing rock. Of course, they make great cat toys also - my adopted kitty, Leia, playing.

I’ve been wanting to Wetfelt existing wool rocks into my landscape layouts for a few years to add more dimension to them. This October ‘21 I have the opportunity to do a featured artist show at the Orchard Gallery of Fine Arts. Here are a few layouts of previously felted rocks, wool, silk, cotton scrim, and some bits of my handwoven.

It was a little harder to Wetfelt the rocks, but overall they felted to my pre-felt wool base quite nicely. I reinforced attachment when I added hand stitching from the back. The piece titled “Tide Rushes In” actually has embroidery on surface of rocks. The pieces are currently being framed in a shadow box by Frame Art and Design. A look at the finished pieces below (tap on photo to bring up title).
